Electrical fire destroys downtown Covington auto shop

COVINGTON, Va. (WDBJ7) An electrical fire destroyed an auto shop in downtown Covington early Friday morning.

Firefighters were called to Robby's Garage on Monroe Avenue around 2:30. The flames tore through the building and also set several cars on fire. Some of those cars exploded. Six cars in total were damaged.

A firefighter was taken to the hospital for bruising from falling debris, but he has since been released.

The fire was under control within a half hour.

Damages are estimated at $100,000.

Traffic was detoured around the area for a time, but is now cleared.
