ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ) - First Baptist Church of Roanoke is collecting backpacks filled with Christmas gifts for kids. The program, called Christmas Backpacks for Appalachian Children, is running for the third year.
Church members fill the backpacks with gifts from toys to school supplies. The church prays on the backpacks and then delivers them on Monday to students in Lee County and other parts of Southwest Virginia.
"Having the opportunity to see a lot of these kids when they see the backpack, it makes every tiring moment, and minute and hour of the preparation and all that goes in to the front end, it makes it so worthwhile.," Jay Dove, Minister of Local and Global Missions for First Baptist Church of Roanoke, said.
In past years, students have written letters to send back to the church members about what these backpacks mean to them.
