First Lady Pamela Northam visits Head Start program in South Boston

South Boston, Va. (WDBJ) - First Lady Pamela Northam visited kids in South Boston's Head Start program, highlight the importance of early childhood development.

Virginia's First Lady prepares to read to children.

Northam spent time with the children and teachers there, and held a discussion with administrators about the early childhood need in South Boston and Halifax County.

She says in Virginia, 40 percent of children going to kindergarten do not start school with the tools they need to be successful.

"School readiness isn't just about getting ready for school on the first day of kindergarten, but it begins in those years before kindergarten when full 90 percent of the brain is developed." said Northam.
