First responders are reminding drivers to be alert when they encounter incidents on the side of the road.

Next week is National Traffic Incident Management Awareness Week. To recognize the event, The Virginia Department of Transportation and first responders from the Lynchburg area held a demonstration Thursday at Thomas Road Baptist Church.

"I know people's curiosity sometimes gets the best of them, but please pay attention because there are a lot of moving parts out there," said Paul Jones, communications manager for VDOT's Lynchburg DIstrict. "We really need you to move on and let us do our job."

The demonstration highlighted emergency personnel and tow truck drivers who have died while working roadside incidents.

Dennis Cash is one of those people. He was killed in 2012 while trying to tow a vehicle away from a crash scene along Route 130 in Amherst County.
