Fishing rodeo in Christiansburg aims to teach kids importance of wildlife conservation

CHRISTIANSBURG, Va. (WDBJ7) An annual Fishing Rode was hosted by the Izaak Walton League in Christiansburg on Sunday .

The goal of the event is to teach kids the importance of wildlife conservation.

"This program is generational, we have sometimes three generations of participants. It's important for kids to get into the outdoors it gets them another release and place to go...and it gets them outside," Peter Jobst of the Izaak Walton League said.

More than 200 kids tried to catch one of 5,000 trout in the pond. After fishing, they got to compete in a fishing tournament for the largest fish.

Participants got to go home with free fishing gear, T-shirts and goodie bags.

The Izaak Walton League has hosted this event since the 1960s.
