Former Virginia Tech, Roanoke College coach Charles Moir dies

WDBJ7 has confirmed that Charles Moir, former basketball coach for Virginia Tech and Roanoke College, has died. Moir's son says he passed away in his sleep Thursday night.

Throughout his career, Moir coached at colleges as well as high schools. Moir started at Virginia Tech as an assistant coach for the men's basketball team in 1963.

He then coached at Roanoke College for six years, beginning in 1967. Moir led RC to five conference championships, four NCAA Tournament appearances and a national championship in 1972; he compiled a record of 133-44.

Moir became head coach for VT from 1976 until 1987. In his 31 seasons as a coach, Moir compiled a record of 616-238.

He was inducted into the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame in 2000.
