Frank Beamer to serve as keynote speaker for Radford's 2017 Spring Commencement

RADFORD, Va. (WDBJ7) Frank Beamer will be Radford University’s 2017 Spring Commencement speaker, according to the university.

Beamer grew up in Carroll County and received his master’s degree in guidance and counseling in 1972 from then Radford College. Beamer’s sisters, Billie Jean and Betty, also graduated from Radford College in 1961 and 1966, respectively. His mother, Herma, graduated from then Radford State Teachers College in 1936.

Beamer began his coaching career at Radford High School as an assistant under Norman Lineburg. Beamer was coaching while working on his graduate degree at Radford. Beamer spent 29 seasons at Virginia Tech, 23 of them winning seasons and 23 consecutive bowl appearances.

The 2017 Spring Commencement will be held on the university’s Moffett Lawn on May 6 at 10 a.m. More than 1,800 students are expected to graduate.
