ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ7) - The Franklin County Sheriff's Office is continuing to investigate a carjacking, abduction, and homicide that they say happened Wednesday.

According to a spokesman with the Franklin County Sheriff's Office, deputies were called to a car crash turned carjacking Wednesday evening.

55-year-old John Eames is accused of pointing a gun at a driver following the 3-car crash and jumping on the passenger side of a vehicle. The driver of the vehicle was unharmed.

According to deputies, 15 minutes later, police were called to Glade Hill where Eames reportedly threatened to kill a woman and fired his gun.
When law enforcement arrived, Eames reportedly shot himself but survived.

Later, deputies were called to Dillard Lane in Rocky Mount where they found 80-year-old Dillard Nolen shot to death in his home.

Deputies believe the homicide may be related to the other crimes Eames is accused of that day.

Wendy's employee William Gagnon was at work Wednesday evening when he noticed something unusual at the intersection near the restaurant.

"When people were taking orders we could hear the loud sirens, you could see the flashing lights," said Gagnon, who explained he thought the extent of the incident was a multi-car accident.

Joyce Schmidt, a friend of Eames' family, is angry and hurt to hear the news.

"It takes a terrible minded person to do something like that," said Schmidt.

"Some people are surprised and some aren't. I guess people who knew John well may not be too surprised."

Schmidt says Eames' personality changes when he is intoxicated.

"You didn't push it if he was drinking you tried to stay away from him."

She says this isn't the first time he's been in trouble with the law.
"He needs to pay for what he's done," she said.

The Sheriff's office says charges against the suspect John Eames are pending and the investigation is ongoing.
