Franklin County deputies pull over driver, find his passenger with drugs

FRANKLIN Co., Va. ( WDBJ7) - Franklin County deputies say they pulled over a driver for an equipment violation, only to find the vehicle's passenger carrying drugs.

Deputies say on January 1, an officer patrolling in Wirtz stopped a pickup truck for an equipment violation. The deputy used his canine partner to search the car. The canine alerted the deputy to a substance.

The deputy reported finding a small plastic bag containing a white crystalline powder, digital scales and hypodermic needles.

The passenger, Brian Allen Smith, of Wirtz, admitted the drugs and paraphernalia were his.

Smith was arrested and charged with possession of a controlled substance. He is being held in the Western Virginia Regional Jail without bond.
