The Virginia Tobacco Region Revitalization Commission announced Wednesday that $650,000 in state funding had been awarded to Franklin County to assist with the installation of approximately 30 miles of new fiber to further broadband Internet access within the county.

The funds will come from the tobacco commission's Last Mile Broadband Program, the release stated. The Franklin County Broadband Authority will partner with Shentel to provide fiber-optic line to unserved and underserved areas of the county, which will make broadband service available to approximately 460 homes.

Shentel plans to invest $820,000 in the expansion of its network, the release stated.
