Friends of a Halifax County man who survived an explosive crash a few months ago are trying to support his family, as he works to recover in the hospital.
Jacob Hazelwood suffered burns on more than 80 percent of his body, after hitting a truck head-on March 28. The crash happened on Lennig Road in Nathalie.
Hazelwood, 22, is being treated at a burn center in North Carolina. His mother is taking time off work to stay with him and friends say the family needs financial support.
"He will be there for probably seven to eight more months before he can be released," said Janet Anderson, a friend of Hazelwood's family. "(His mother) will probably not work during that entire time. They still have a mortgage on their house and we're trying to help them keep the house."
The Mount Laurel Ruritan Club is hosting a benefit to raise money for Hazelwood. That event is happening June 1 from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m. at the Ruritan Club and will feature live music, food, an afternoon auction, and a raffle drawing.
Those wishing to purchase tickets can contact the Ruritan Club at (434) 446-5626.
