CHRISTIANSBURG, Va. (WDBJ7) The Montgomery County Sheriff's Office is mourning the death of one of its own.

Lieutenant Lewis Heslip died unexpectedly Tuesday.

In a statement, the sheriff says someone found him unresponsive beside his bicycle near Blacksburg.

He was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

Heslip spent much of his time off duty volunteering at the animal shelter and was part of the Montgomery County Friends of Animal Control and Care.

People he volunteered with say he was always in a good mood.

"He was always there for a hug. He was always there for a pat on the back. He was just always positive. That's what I'm going to miss. He was such a gift to so many of us," said Michele Lewis, a volunteer and board member with Montgomery County Animal Friends of Control and Care.

Heslip started working at the sheriff's office in 1998.

He worked his way through the ranks and became Lieutenant of a Patrol shift.
