Genetic counselor offers advice on genetic counselor awareness day

ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ) - Today is Genetic Counselor Awareness Day. Genetic counselors work with patients to help them interpret testing and understand the implications of genetic disease. They can sit down with patients and discuss testing options and potential risks.

One genetic counselor suggests avoiding genetic testing for health reasons unless you can meet with a genetic counselor to fully understand what the tests mean.

"It can be really easy to misread some of those tests and not understand what your actual risks are and what those actually mean," Kelly Usrey, a Genetic Counselor with Carilion Maternal Fetal Medicine, said.

If you are considering genetic testing, she says to first make sure you need it and that the lab is valid.
