(WDBJ7)-- Local emergencies have been declared by a few of our hometowns following the earlier State of Emergency ordered by Governor Ralph Northam.
According to a joint release, Botetourt County, the City of Roanoke, the City of Salem, Roanoke County and the Town of Vinton are all under local emergencies. The governments of these areas are now able to request State and Federal resources if they would like.
This move gives legal authority and flexibility to mobilize different resources throughout the area. It also allows the critical operations for maintaining the localities to continue as planned. Regional, state and other government aid can also be requested.
In a separate release, Henry County also declared a local emergency. They point to this move as also allowing the Administrator to adjust standard employment rules that would allow county employees to expand the types of response efforts they may help with.
Tuesday, Rockbridge County, the City of Lexington and the City of Buena Vista jointly declared a Local Emergency. The City of Danville also announced a local State of Emergency to enable the city to have access to additional resources as needed. Business travel of City of Danville employees has been suspended unless approved by the City Manager's Office.
Local leaders said: “We are working together as a region to continually plan, coordinate and evaluate new information in this rapidly evolving public health threat. Our top priority is protecting the health and safety of our residents. We, along with elected officials and staff will continually reevaluate the way in which we provide services to the public. Our communities should be prepared for any adjustments, postponements, and cancellations that go into effect as we work together as a region to keep everyone safe. Thank you for your patience and anticipated cooperation.”
With the support of the mayor and vice-mayor, Covington City Manager Krystal Onaitis declared a Local Emergency for that city.
The Pittsylvania County Board of Supervisors also declared a Local Emergency Tuesday evening.
On Wednesday, Bedford County and Wythe County declared a local state of emergency. While Wythe county does not have a recorded positive case of COVID-19, officials decided to take preemptive action.
“Wythe County is asking citizens to help in the reduction of possible exposures and follow the guidance set forth by the state and federal governments,” Emergency Services Coordinator Curtis Crawford said.
