Home destroyed, cat dies in late night fire in Roanoke County

ROANOKE CO., Va. (WDBJ7) -- A home in Roanoke County is estimated to be a total loss after a late night fire on Sunday.

According to the Roanoke County Fire & Rescue Department, firefighters responded to the 2900 block of Powell Drive, in the Fort Lewis area, at around 11:15 p.m. Sunday.

When Fort Lewis and Salem crews arrived to the scene, they found heavy fire and smoke showing from the front and roof of the home. Crews were able to bring the fire under control in about an hour.

One cat died in the fire, but no one else was injured, according to the Roanoke County Fire & Rescue Department. A man who lived inside the home was not home at the time of the fire. He is now displaced and will be staying with family in the area.

Crews have not yet stated a cause of the fire. The Roanoke County Fire Marshal's Office is on scene to investigate.
