Hometown Adventures: Paddle Boarding

MONETA, Va. (WDBJ7) Caitlin Francis is enjoying Hometown Adventures at Smith Mountain Lake all summer long.

Paddle boarding is next on the adventure list for Caitlin!

By now, you’ve probably heard of paddle boarding, maybe even gone yourself!

Mountain 2 Island is a stand up paddle board, kayak and boat company. They’re based on Claytor Lake, and also Smith Mountain Lake!

Michael Valach, owner of the company says they’ve seen a lot of growth, and a lot of demand for what they’re offering at the lake.

“We try to teach paddle boarding year round. We do classes indoors in aquatics centers, we do yoga classes indoors on paddle boards in the winter time, so we try to keep the sport going year round,” Valach said.

So Caitlin asked, what’s the likelihood of falling in the water?

“Maybe 1 in 20 will actually end up in the water but normally when they end up in the water it’s normally because of a boat wake or something like that,” Valach said.

He says the key is not to look down, and paddle with your knees slightly bent.

“Get properly sized for the equipment, make sure you’re on the right size board, the paddles are sized for you, always wear a life jacket and be aware of the weather and other boaters and other lake users,” he said.

Mountain 2 Island does paddle sport rentals, so kayaking in addition to paddle boarding. And they’re giving everyone, of all experience levels, something to try.

Your dogs can paddle with you, or you can do paddle yoga at the lake.

“We do classes here with Franklin County Parks and Rec., once a month we offer classes here, and then we also do instruction whether somebody would want to do it just on their own.”

And after about a minute, you honestly get the hang of it. It’s a pretty good workout! Plus, it’s also a great way to relax and enjoy the lake.
