Hometown Adventures: Sailing

MONETA, Va. (WDBJ7) Caitlin Francis is enjoying Hometown Adventures at Smith Mountain Lake all summer long.

This time, Caitlin’s sailing!

“The big difference between riding a power boat and sailing is about the journey rather than the destination, because you don’t just turn a key and steer the boat. You have to have an understanding of how you’re going to harness the wind, if you will, and make the boat go,” said Pete Phillip, owner of Smith Mountain Lake Sailing School and Charters.

Phillip has been doing this since he was 16, now he owns the Smith Mountain Lake Sailing School and Sailing Charters, so he’s treating me just like a student.

This is the J-24 Sloop, it’s a pretty common sailboat Phillip uses for all kinds of lessons. We start with basic terminology because he says it’s important for safety.

“The most difficult thing is probably figuring out where the wind is coming from…that and the terminology,” he said.

But the real great thing about sailing?

“I think it’s the tranquility for one thing it’s extremely peaceful, and at the same time it can be exhilarating and very exciting when the wind is up.”

Phillip says if you’ve never been sailing before, it’s an experience you can’t miss out on.

“You don’t need a motor, you don’t need a license you could sail this laser once you figured out how to do it, you could sail it right off the dock,” he said.
