Juneteenth Celebration scheduled Saturday in Roanoke

ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ7) Roanoke's Juneteenth celebration is set for Saturday, and the annual event will bring a large crowd to Washington Park for food, fellowship and live entertainment.

The annual gathering honors an important moment in American history - the day in 1865, when slaves in Texas learned they had been freed.

Jeff Artis is a longtime member of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, which organizes the event.

"Tomorrow is not a day where we're white or black, Republican, Democrat, liberal, conservative," Artis said. "Tomorrow is the day that we're going to be brothers and sisters. And we want you to come out and have a good time with us and enjoy things."

The event is free.

It is scheduled from 12:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Saturday in Roanoke's Washington Park.
