Thaxton shooting suspect fired a shot at WDBJ7 vehicle, other vehicles

The 18-year-old suspect who fired at a WDBJ7 reporter's vehicle and other vehicles on Thursday afternoon in the Thaxton area of Bedford County has been identified as Daniel Flint.

Flint shot at a news vehicle being driven by WDBJ7 reporter Tim Saunders. He is OK.

Flint also shot at other vehicles in the area.

The incident began at 12:30 p.m. Thursday after a neighbor heard gunshots on Wheatland Road.

When deputies responded to the suspect's home, they found a fire burning behind the house next to a large propane tank. They also found damage inside the home, including bullet holes and broken doors.

At 1:43 p.m., a 9-1-1 call was received from WDBJ7 about a person shooting at a news vehicle at the intersection of Von Roy Road and Wheatland Road. Eight minutes later, deputies got a call about a man with a camouflage jacket who shot the tire out of a vehicle on Wheatland Road.

At 2:03 p.m., Flint was arrested.

Flint had a 270 rifle on him when he was arrested.

He is charged with arson, malicious shooting of an occupied vehicle, and attempted malicious shooting of an occupied vehicle. Further charges are likely.

UPDATE

The 18-year-old man arrested for a shooting incident in the Thaxton area shot at a vehicle being driven by WDBJ7 reporter Tim Saunders.

Saunders was driving on Wheatland Road at the time when he saw the man carrying a rifle. He then turned his vehicle around to leave the area. That’s when he heard a gunshot.

Saunders was able to safely leave the area and call 9-1-1. Minutes later, the man was arrested.

At the time Saunders encountered the man, he was responding to reports of a house fire and law enforcement on Wheatland Road.

Saunders is in the process of giving a statement to law enforcement.

The Bedford County Sheriff’s Office is holding a 4:30 p.m. news conference about the incident. WDBJ7 plans to live stream the news conference.

UPDATE

An 18-year-old is in custody in the Thaxton area following a shooting incident.

No one was hurt.

A news conference will be held at 4 p.m. at the Bedford County Sheriff’s Office.

There is a large law enforcement presence on Wheatland Road in the Thaxton area of Bedford County.

A perimeter has been established.

At 12:30 p.m. today, Bedford County 911 dispatchers received a call from the 4500 block of Dickerson Mill Road, Bedford. The caller said he heard gunshots come from a house on Wheatland Road and that the young man that lived there has a history of mental issues. The caller also called the stepfather of the male subject and told him that he saw his stepson walking up the road with a rifle. The step father called 911 and advised that there were two rifles in the house and one of them was loaded. He also said both guns were supposed to be locked up. Dispatchers also received a call from 5301 Wheatland Road and the caller said a subject with blond hair was ringing his door bell and holding a rifle. He then said the subject had run down there the woods. Bedford County Sheriff’s deputies along with Bedford Town Police officers and Conservation Police responded to the area and attempted to locate the subject.

After arriving at the subject’s house, 5202 Wheatland Road, deputies found a fire burning behind the house next to a large propane tank. The Bedford Fire Department arrived an extinguished the fire. Deputies also found extensive damage to the inside of the residence, including broken doors and what appeared to be bullet holes.

At 1:43 p.m. dispatchers received a call from WDBJ 7, who advised that a subject had fired a shot at their van near the intersection of Von Roy Road and Wheatland Road.

At 1:51 p.m., dispatchers received a call advising a male with a camo jacket had shot a tire out on their vehicle on Wheatland Road.  

At 2:03 p.m. deputies located the male subject on Von Roy Road and took him into custody without incident. A .270 rifle, belonging to the stepfather, was recovered at this time. The subject is Daniel Flint, age 18, 5202 Wheatland Road, Bedford, Va. He is being charged with arson, malicious shooting of an occupied vehicle and attempted malicious shooting of an occupied vehicle. As the investigation continues further charges are possible.
