Liberty football to make jump from FCS to FBS

LYNCHBURG, Va. (WDBJ7) Liberty University's waiver request to be reclassified as an FBS team has been approved by the NCAA.

Liberty submitted the waiver in January, requesting relief to enter into the two-year FBS reclassification process without an invitation to join a FBS conference.

Starting in the 2017-18 academic year, Liberty’s football program will begin the two-year FBS reclassification process.
Liberty will compete as an FBS independent during the 2018 season, which includes having three FBS home games. The football program will be eligible for bowl games in the 2019 season and will be required to play at least five home FBS opponents.

Liberty has scheduled a press conference to announce its plans at 5 p.m.

Liberty football is currently classified as a Football Championship Subdivision member. The FCS has a 24-team playoff series that utilizes a single elimination process. The Football Bowl Subdivision has bowl-style games in the postseason.
