ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ7) Local coffee brewer Red Rooster is now preparing for a national coffee competition in Seattle.
Red Rooster's Ethiopia Washed Hambela was named winner of the 2017 Good Food Awards. The blend was chosen on standards such as environmentally sound agriculture practices, good animal husbandry, sourcing transparency and responsible relationships throughout the supply chain.
It was from the same farm but the Natural Hambela blend that brewer Philip Hatter used to make the semifinals at a Specialty Coffee Association Championship in Knoxville. He competed against 36 other brewers to make one of the most memorable cups of coffee.
"I'm competing against people I follow on Instagram, it was intimidating. While you do it everyday you are not being judged everyday by all these specific standards," Philip Hatter of Red Rooster Coffee said.
Hatter says he will use the judges feedback to train for the national competition in April. If he wins, he will represent the U.S. in the international competition.
