ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ7) - More than a thousand seniors in our hometowns will receive some Christmas cheer this year, thanks to a group of dedicated volunteers.
Tuesday, volunteers could be seen in an otherwise empty office, stuffing bags upon bags of gifts for local senior citizens.
All of them will be getting exactly what they wished for this Christmas.
"Be a Santa to a Senior" allows people to shop for and deliver presents to seniors who live alone or in care facilities, fulfilling the wishes they submitted to the organization.
Abby Head, project coordinator for the organization, said many of them ask only for blankets, postage stamps or their favorite sodas.
"So often they love it when you can sit down for a few minutes and chat with them and get to know them," Head said. "And they may share some holiday stories. And my family would go and sing Christmas carols for them. It's the most special part of Christmas for me, some of my favorite memories.
This organization still needs volunteers to deliver presents throughout the next two weeks.
