LYNCHBURG, Va. A Lynchburg educator is being singled out for his efforts to teach students who speak English as a second language.

Kenneth Burrows, Jr.

Kenneth Burrows, Jr. is the 2016 "teacher of the year" for Lynchburg City Schools. He learned about the recognition at a surprise assembly Monday morning.

Burrows is a teacher in the "English Language Learners" program at Heritage Elementary. He helps students from other countries master the English language and catch up with their peers.

"I don't do this for recognition," Burrows told WDBJ7. " I do this so students can achieve and faculty can work together to promote a good culture here."

One of the many perks Burrows will get for being teacher of the year is a car to drive for the next year, courtesy of Lynchburg Nissan. He'll also be entered in regional and statewide teacher of the year contests.
