LYNCHBURG, Va. (WDBJ7) Freshmen at Lynchburg College spent the day giving back.

It's part of the school's "Hornet Days" activities. Students are required to complete community service project and in turn they build relationships throughout the city. Activities included packaging meals for the homeless and cleaning. We caught up with one group that was completing yard work at Miriam's House, a local homeless center.

New Jersey native and incoming freshman Laura Arriaza says,
"I think [giving back is] really good because honestly I probably wouldn't have done it without the incentive and now that I'm here it feels really good doing it."

Some students also got to navigate obstacle courses as a part of the Outdoor Leadership Program.
