On Monday, they started taking applications for Angel Tree gift assistance.
Last year, more than 4,000 needy children and elderly living in the communities of Lynchburg, Bedford, Amherst, Appomattox, Campbell and Nelson County received new gifts and clothing as a result of this program.
"Not every parent can afford to buy their kids Christmas. Times are tight for everybody these days, so to make sure no kid goes without anything, the Salvation Army basically becomes their safety net," said Sheri Jones with the Lynchburg Salvation Army.
The Angle Tree program started in Lynchburg in nearly 30 years ago and has expanded nationwide.
Individuals can apply in person at The Salvation Army Corps Community Center located at 2215 Park Avenue. Sign-ups will take place the first two weeks of Oct., Mon. through Fri., 9 am -12 pm and 1 pm -3 pm daily.
