Lynchburg CIty Council made history Monday by electing the city's first African American woman to serve in the position of Mayor.
Treney Tweedy was selected for the position by her fellow city council members in a split vote of 4-3.
Tweedy previously served as Vice Mayor. She replaces outgoing Mayor Joan Foster, who retired from city council at the end of June.
Mary Jane Dolan was selected to serve as the city's new Vice Mayor.
