LYNCHBURG, Va. (WDBJ7) A new chief has led to the return of a longstanding tradition for the Lynchburg Police Department.

The son of a Lynchburg police officer helps attach his father's new badge to his uniform at a promotional ceremony Friday.

The agency held a promotional ceremony for officers and professional staff Friday afternoon.

Ryan Zuidema, a longtime member of the force who was recently promoted to the chief's position, brought back the event as a way to recognize both his officers and their families.

Spouses and children of those being promoted helped pin new badges and insignia to their loved one's uniforms.

"They make a lot of sacrifices. Families of our officers and professional staff are up late hours, worrying about folks when they are out on calls," Zuidema told WDBJ7. "It's important that we recognize them."

The promotions of nine officers and two staff members were recognized at Friday's ceremony.
