Authorities are asking for the public's help in solving a deadly hit and run in Rockbridge County.

Around 1:30 a.m. Friday morning a state trooper noticed a car parked on the right side of Interstate 81 near mile marker 201.

Officials say that the trooper then pulled up behind the vehicle and noticed a deceased man who was missing a leg.

The leg was found on the shoulder of the highway, which was evidence that the man had been struck by a vehicle.

Authorities determined a commercial motor vehicle was headed down the right lane of the interstate when it struck the man, who was standing outside of his car. The commercial vehicle then drove off.

The impact of the hit caused the front bumper to be pulled off of the commercial vehicle and entangle around the man.

Troopers believe that the commercial vehicle might have been a freight line tractor trailer based on evidence collected at the scene.

The incident is still under investigation.

State Police ask if you have any information on the incident to give them a call.
