According to the Franklin County Sheriff's Office, Rodney Brown, of Hardy, was killed Saturday at his home on Woodthrush Circle.

Michael Alexander Brown has now been changed from person of interest to suspect in this murder case. He is the son of Rodney Brown's live-in girlfriend.

There is no clear motive at this point, and it is unknown where Michael may be going. He has been known to stay in the woods, along with National Parks and Forests.

According to police, he is believed to be armed with a high-powered rifle and possibly have other weapons. Recent reports show him driving a 2008 black Lincoln Town Car, possibly with a North Carolina license plate (EHP-4877).

Michael Alexander Brown is a Marine, and was last stationed at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina. He deserted his post as a combat engineer around October 18. Reports have indicated that he has been in and around Franklin County during the last two weeks.

According to the Craven County North Carolina Sheriff's Office, they believe he could possibly be in their county, with his last known address registered at Craven Street in New Bern.

Kenneth Meador lives on Woodthrush Drive. Just a few blocks over on Woodthrush Circle, his neighbor, 54-year-old Rodney Brown, was shot and killed Saturday before noon.

"I was just startled that it was him and just so close to home, you just don't think about that happening in your neighborhood," Meador said.
"My wife is very upset about it, she's scared."

While Brown is still on the run, neighbors are left confused as to why someone would want to shoot Rodney Brown. "He was a fine fellow, I'd known him, he wasn't a bad guy, never did anything wrong that I knew of, he just worked all time," Meador said.

The Franklin County Sheriff's Office asks anyone with information to call 540-483-6662.
