MARTINSVILLE, Va. (WDBJ7) Martinsville Police are still searching for the man they believe shot and killed Tyrone Herndon outside a gas station in the early morning hours Saturday.

Police believe 24-year-old, Terrell Martin is responsible. They haven’t been able to find him.

Police say it could have been prevented. They say it was a fight turned deadly, and they just want to hear the entire story.

It happened at the Valero gas station on Brookdale Road. Around 12:17 in the morning on Saturday, police were called. There was a victim with a gunshot wound to the abdomen.

The victim, Tyrone Herndon, was taken to the hospital where he died.

“The gas station was open. There were several people within the store at the time and we’re hoping that anyone that may have been within the store at this time, they would come forward and talk to us," says Martinsville Police Lt. Sandy Hines.

Police say they are still conducting interviews to figure out what exactly happened.

“It shouldn’t happen like this even though there was a fight. Going to get a gun, or to end it with a firearm is not the way things should happen," says Lt. Hines.

They’re still looking for the man they believe is responsible, Terrell Martin.

“Been in contact with the suspect, the shooter’s mother, and we’re hoping for a peaceful turn-in from Mr. Martin, Terrell Martin," says Lt. Hines.

Police cannot say what started the fight or what else surrounds the crime at this time.

They say they need to speak to Martin.

“We want to hear his side of the story. There’s two sides to every story," says Lt. Hines.

Lt. Hines says Martin has his personal cell phone number, and he urges him to call him.

Anyone else with information about what happened is asked to call the police department, or crimestoppers at 276-63-crime. You can remain anonymous.

For now, Martin is still classified as armed and dangerous.
