MARTINSVILLE, Va. (WDBJ7) Martinsville Police say crime is down.

From January to June of 2016, overall crime has dropped 28 percent from the same time frame in 2015.

Violent crime alone has dropped by 56 percent.

Police are attributing the decrease to their approach.

Captain Robert Fincher says intelligence led policing, direct and foot patrols, upper level drug indictments, fair and impartial policing and community policing are reasons for their success.

He says this would not have of been possible without the teamwork from the community.

"Everyone wants to live in a safe neighborhood. Everyone wants to work in a safe environment. So working together, we are hoping to create that environment," Martinsville Police Department Captain Robert Fincher said.

Captain Fincher says the most common violent crime the department deals with is domestic violence.

The department is starting a domestic violence program this year.

It is all part of working towards becoming a state certified crime prevention community.
