MARTINSVILLE, Va. (WDBJ7) In the Martinsville area, one in six children are not prepared for kindergarten.

That's below the state average according to the Virginia Department of Education.

The group Help Engage Youth says summer time is crucial to keeping children engaged and preventing summer learning loss.

"And often times when they fall behind. Let's say in reading, if they are not reading on grade level by the third grade then they continue to fall behind and it also increases their likelihood of not graduating from high school," Help Engage Youth Director India Brown said.

The Summer Learning Day Celebration at J. Frank Wilson park Thursday night had to be rescheduled because of the weather.

A new date has not been set.

Leaders are encouraging parents to come out to see what the area has to offer.

H.E.Y. works with Smart Beginnings, United Way and many other programs in the Martinsville Henry County area to provide summer programs to the youth.
