ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ7) Visitors to Mill Mountain Zoo were enjoying the late winter warmup Thursday afternoon. And so were the residents.
And this year, the zoo is celebrating its new accreditation from the Zoological Association of America.
The process took several months and the review included an on-site inspection by a team of experts.
Robin Lentz is the zoo's Co-Director.
"Roanoke houses a great little zoo," she told WDBJ7. "And we are really passionate about the animals in our care, and all of our effort goes into making sure your visit as a guest to our facility is enjoyable and engaging."
The zoo lost its accreditation from another organization two years ago, because of concerns about its long-term financial health.
Although the financial challenges linger, the zoo is making strides in that area as well.
"We're still working hard to shore up our finances," Lentz said, "but I can say absolutely we are in a much better financial position today than we were on this day last year, and from the previous year, so we continue to make sure that our base is strong financially."
