Montgomery County Sheriff's Office warns of jury duty scam

MONTGOMERY CO., Va. (WDBJ7) The Montgomery County Sheriff's Office is warning the public of a local scam.

Imposters are calling people while pretending to be Montgomery County deputies, spoofing the department's phone number.

The impersonators then say they have a federal bench warrant for not showing up for jury duty and then ask for $2,000 worth of Game Stop gift cards.

One victim says the caller made threatening calls repeatedly through voice and text messages.

The sheriff's office says this is not how law enforcement agencies operate. They say if you receive these types of calls, do not fall victim and purchase the cards or give them any type of personal information.
