CARROLL CO., Va. (WDBJ7) A multi-car accident on Interstate 77 South in Carroll County is causing major backups Monday afternoon, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation.
The accident is at mile marker 6.5.
All lanes are open. Traffic backups are about 18 miles long.
An additional tractor-trailer accident on I-77 North caused backups at mile marker 1.
Virginia State Police began responding to several chain-reaction crashes on I-77 Monday morning around 11:30 a.m. There have been four multi-car crashes involving anywhere between three to seven cars on I-77 North and South.
Due to extreme fog on Fancy Gap Mountain, current visibility is about 200 feet. Traffic is being detoured around the crashes as state police work to clear the crashes and re-open lanes.
Drivers passing through I-77 between Wytheville and the North Carolina line should be aware of changing conditions and traffic patterns.
