MARTINSVILLE, Va. (WDBJ7) Neighbors say they were in shock when they heard Katherine Likens was found dead. She lived on Maple Street, less than 5 minutes away from where police discovered her body.

"I been knowing Kathy since about 2007."

WDBJ7 spoke with a neighbor who didn't want to be identified, but knew Likens for quite some time.

"She had a good sense of humor, she was a great person. As far as helping, she would give you the shirt off her back."

He says he's still having a hard time processing what happened.

"I was just shocked and overwhelmed because especially knowing how she died, that's what made it troublesome for me."

He's not the only one in shock. News of Likens death has shaken other residents as well.

Neighbor William Daniels said, "I couldn't believe it."

Daniels tells me he didn't know Likens personally, but would see her in the mornings.

"She would be getting ready to go to work. She would have her apron on and everything. I don't know if she walked or if she had a ride," said Daniels.

Martinsville Police discovered Katherine Likens body in the wooded area behind this BB&T.

Her death is now being investigated as a homicide.

Likens worked at nearby Rania's restaurant for years.
The manager says he was very sad to learn of her death.
