BREAKING: Ralph Northam wins Governor's Race

Fairfax, Va. (WDBJ7) Virginia has elected a new governor.

Former Lieutenant Governor Ralph Northam was elected as the 73rd governor of Virginia Tuesday night.

Aside from serving as Lieutenant Governor, Governor Northam served as an Army doctor and business owner.

According to his campaign website, Governor Northam grew up on Virginia’s Eastern Shore and attended public school. He later attended the Virginia Military Institute, where he graduated with distinction.

After VMI, Northam was commissioned a second lieutenant in the United States Army. He attended Eastern Virginia Medical School and then traveled to San Antonio for a pediatric residency, where he met his wife, Pam.

For 18 years, Governor Northam has volunteered as medical director for the Edmarc Hospice for Children in Portsmouth, where he cares for terminally ill children.
