UPDATE: State Police release name of driver killed in Bedford County crash

FOREST, Va. (WDBJ7) Virginia State Police have released the name of the driver who was killed in a crash Friday night in Bedford County.

A State Police spokesperson said Wayne L. Johnson, 63, was killed when the 2006 Chevrolet Trailblazer he was driving ran off Route 221 and hit a mailbox, a sign and several trees.

Johnson was from Lynchburg.


Police and fire crews are on the scene of a crash on Elkton Farm Road in Forest.

Police confirmed one fatality. The crash happened around 9:50 p.m.

It was a single vehicle traveling northbound on Route 221.

The vehicle ran off the left side of the road, went across across the road again and then hit a sign.

The passenger in the vehicle was a family member. That passenger was not injured. But the driver was killed.

Alcohol, speed and drugs are not a factor at this time, but medical examiners will look into it.

State police are also investigating.

The vehicle has been cleared from the scene.
