'Oh deer!' Grottoes bank has unusual break-in

ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, Va. (WHSV) — The F&M Bank branch in Grottoes had a special visitor overnight.

Branch manager Ashley Lam received a call from their alarm company around 2:30 in the morning about suspected activity inside the bank. When she arrived at the bank, it wasn't the activity she was expecting.

In surveillance video from the bank, you can see a 5-point buck run across the street, leap into the air, and crash through one of the front windows of the bank.

Lam says police were already there when she arrived and they were all relieved to find out it wasn't a person inside the bank.

The deer caused mostly cosmetic damage inside the bank, and that was cleaned up by this afternoon. Lam said the lobby of the bank was closed briefly during clean-up but reopened in the afternoon.

This is the first time that animals have visited this bank in Grottoes.

"Years ago, there was a bear that came through the drive-through, like walking through the drive-through, we're in a rural community, so not uncommon to see nature, but definitely never had one in the branch before," Lam said.
