Over 2,800 start off Thanksgiving with a 5k run at Lynchburg's annual Turkey Trot

LYNCHBURG, Va. (WDJB7) In Lynchburg, over 2,800 people hit the pavement before enjoying their Thanksgiving feast.

Turkeys of all ages came out for the annual Turkey Trot 5k walk/run. The race brought in over 100 hundred thousand dollars for Human Kind, which provides a slew of programs in Central Virginia for families and individuals ensuring mental and financial well-being.

"It's a race for a cause so today,” said Ashleigh Karol, Director of Development for Human Kind. “We provide low income counseling to folks across the region, as well as fixed interest car loans and home visiting programs, a pre-school with a sliding scale- just to name a few."

The race is a family friendly event. The Davis family had four generations participating today. The grandfather said he was proud to be at the race with his daughter, granddaughter, and great granddaughter.

As the runners crossed the finish line, organizers say they hope people had a fun time and always remember the reason for the season.
