UPDATE: One person hurt in Northwest Roanoke shooting

ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ7) Roanoke police are responding to a shooting early Wednesday morning.

It happened on the 3100 block of Courtland Road NW near Lyndhurst Street around 4:30 a.m.

Police say one man was shot and has been taken to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital. The injury does not appear to be life threatening, according to a Roanoke City Police spokesman.

People heading to out to work had to find a different route and kids had their buses re-routed.

One mom WDBJ7 spoke with says she ended up walking about 10 of the kids to the bus stop, which is usually right in front of her house, up the road to the corner of Lyndhurst Street -- which is right through the crime scene.

Another caregiver says she didn't want to take any chances with the two young girls living in her home. She kept them both home from school.

Neighbor Frances "Cricket" Hartman says, "This is the times that they have to grow up in. And it's not a safe place."

Both women we spoke with said they didn't get any type of communication from the school system.

Police have not made any arrests at this time.
