Power was out for over 1,000 people in Roanoke Wednesday afternoon.

The outage affected areas near Jefferson and Elm streets. Roanoke City Police say the outage was caused by a utility pole that caught on fire. The fire has since been put out.

According to AEP, the outage was reported at 3:20 p.m. The power company has dispatched a crew out to the area. The crew determined the outage was caused by a squirrel that was able to access the top part of the utility pole.

The estimated time for complete restoration is 7 p.m. Crews needed time to figure out the severity of the damage and assess what repairs, big or small, had to be made.
