Race weekend kicks off at Martinsville Speedway

HENRY Co., Va. (WDBJ7) It's the weekend race fans have been waiting for. The STP 500 is about to roll into Martinsville.

Qualifying for the STP 500 is at 4:35. The STP 500 kicks off Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock.

Sunday morning, track president Clay Campbell says they're offering fans a Green Flag Experience. Folks can see Dale Earnhart Jr., Denny Hamlin and other drivers, as well as get the chance to walk on the race track.

The folks at Martinsville are getting ready to celebrate a major milestone. All while race fans have already been out here - some for as much as a week - getting that complete race experience.

Sandra Lawrence, Martinsville Speedway Camper, said, "We have met so many nice people that we camp with that now we are friends outside of camping. That's why we love it here."

Clay Campbell, Martinsville Speedway President, said, “The biggest thing - this is our 70th anniversary. 70 years for any business is phenomenal but the fans are the reason we've been here 70 years.”

We did talk with the folks at Martinsville about rain plans and procedures. They say that NASCAR gets the final call and they try to make sure everything goes on as scheduled.

The folks at Martinsville put lights in and they’re ready for this season. There is a chance that fans could see qualifying under the lights.
