Radford University student reminisces about New York Fashion Week
"Big smiles," a photographer shouts as paparazzi snap photos of models on the red carpet.
New York Fashion Week is one of the most important fashion events in the industry and this year, it was even more important for newcomer Mashail Alghamdi.
"I had a full collection of 12 garments in the show," she said.
Making her the first designer from Saudi Arabia to show a collection at the prestigious event.
"It felt amazing to represent my country," Alghamdi said.
However, before she was walking the runway, Alghamdi was putting her collection together at Radford University.
"This is my showstopper," she told WDBJ7 gesturing to a beautiful garment displayed proudly on a mannequin.
She said that after her show, she had to answer a lot of questions from the press.
"People were shocked that this was my first collection in a show because it was one of the best," Alghamdi smiled.
But the reward came with a lot of hard work.
"I faced cultural challenges and it was so hard for me to introduce myself in such a challenging industry. I hope that will inspire a lot of women around the world to pursue they dreams."
In the mean time, she'll finish her classes, graduate in December, then return to her home in Saudi Arabia, but it's not the last time you'll see Mashail Alghamdi.
"I'm going to show my collection in Paris, London, New York, again and again so you will see me everywhere," she smiled. "This is just the beginning."
