AMHERST Co., Va. (WDBJ7) -- A retired sheriff from Amherst County is making a bid for the Virginia House of Delegates.

Jimmy Ayers announced Friday he's running for the Republican ticket for District 24.

The seat is now vacant after Delegate Ben Cline's successful bid for Congress.

Ayers retired as the sheriff in 2015.

He says his more than 30 years of public service qualifies him for the job. "The 24th district would broaden my ability to serve people but as I said earlier, I am willing to take that challenge, face that challenge and do it to the best of my ability," he explained.

Ayers says his platform is pro-God, pro-life and pro-second amendment.

District primaries are next weekend and election is set for December 18.
