ROANOKE Co., Va. (WDBJ7) Changes are coming to the Richfield Retirement Community in Roanoke County. The board of directors and staff broke ground on new development.

In the summer of 2020, the site will have a new skilled nursing facility that will be attached to the rehabilitation center. The not-for-profit retirement community will also build more than one hundred apartments on the campus.

"The world is changing, people are trying to age in place," said
Cherie Grisso, Richfield Chief Financial Office, "so skilled nursing is changing. We want to make sure we have a home-like setting for every single resident, that is the biggest shift on this campus."

Retirees will also enjoy an updated town center featuring several amenities like a fitness center, salon, and chapel.
