ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ7) -- The names of two Roanoke public places named after a Confederate general could be renamed after a City Council vote on Tuesday, Feb. 19.

Jackson Park Branch Library and Jackson Park are named after Thomas Jonathan "Stonewall" Jackson.

At a council meeting Feb. 19, Roanoke City Council will vote to change Jackson Park Branch Library to Belmont Branch Library and the name of Jackson Park to Belmont Park.

The name change of both places follows the July 2018 decision to rename Stonewall Jackson Middle School to John P. Fishwick Middle School.

The city researched the history of the park and found it was known as "Belmont Park" prior to 1925. The park was renamed after the name of the middle school was established.

According to a news update on the Roanoke website, City Council is taking action on the name change to better align the city's policy for the communities which it serves.

This proposal was reviewed by the Board of the Southeast Action Forum at its meeting on Jan. 29, 2019.
