Roanoke City Sheriff's Office holds recruitment event in hopes of filling 16 deputy vacancies
The Roanoke City Sheriff’s Office has 16 vacant deputy positions.
To help close that gap, the office held a one day recruitment event Saturday where applicants took a written exam and completed a physical evaluation before taking part in an interview.
The current shortage of deputies is taxing everyone who works in the Sheriff’s Office.
“Really it just puts a strain on those individuals that have to work extra shifts, overtime, things like that, so what we’re doing is we’re trying to ease that tension a little bit by getting recruits through the door,” said Maj. David Bell, the Chief Deputy with the Roanoke City Sheriff’s Office.
More than a dozen recruits took part in the event, but the need for deputies is even larger than that.
