ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ) -- Roanoke County Public Schools is offering new incentives to attract and retain bus drivers.

Thursday, the School Board voted to approve $3,000 signing bonuses for all drivers hired by the end of the year.

Currently, the school system is looking to hire up to 20 new drivers: 10 full-time and 10 substitutes.

“It’s a great profession where you can make an impact on students, you’re the first person the students see in the morning, the last person you see at the end of the day, so it’s a great job and we’re trying to attract some more people,” said Dr. Ken Nicely, Superintendent of Roanoke Co. Schools.

The school division is also offering a $3,000 retention bonus to all drivers on staff. Drivers who refer someone else to join the transportation team will also receive an additional $500 bonus.
