Roanoke County Public Schools to offer free summer meals

Roanoke County Public Schools (RCPS) will offer free meals to all children during the summer.

This summer, RCPS will participate in the

, a state-administered program dedicated to providing free healthy meals and snacks to children in low-income areas.

, meals will be provided to all children regardless of race, color, national origin, sex, age or disability.

"Just come on out. There's no paperwork, there's no registration," Roanoke County Public Schools Spokesperson Chuck Lionberger said. "All you have to do is show up and say hi."

Free meals will start at 11:30 a.m. and last until 12:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, with the exception of July 4 (Independence Day).

Meals will be provided on a first come, first serve basis at the following sites:

Burlington Elementary School

Location: 6533 Peters Creek Road, Roanoke, VA 24019

Timespan: From May 28 to July 12, 2019 (closed July 4 and 5 in observance of Independence Day)

Herman L. Horn Elementary School

Location: 1002 Ruddell Road, Vinton, VA 24179

Monday through Thursday, from May 28 to July 11, 2019 (closed July 4 in observance of Independence Day)

Oak Grove Elementary School

Location: 5005 Grandin Road Ext., Roanoke, VA 24018

Monday through Thursday, from June 3 to July 11, 2019 (closed July 4 in observance of Independence Day)

Last year, the program served 4,000 meals. This year the school district hopes to serve even more.
